Abstract

802,712. Twin rim wheels. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 12,1956 [Sept. 12, 1955], No. 27872/56. Class 144 (2). A twin rim wheel comprises two drop-centre tapered bead-seat rims 25, 26 mounted on a cylindrical peripheral axial flange 13 of a wheel disc 12, each rim having a cylindrical ledge 30 which extends axially for a substantial distance from one of its bead seats 28 towards the dropcentre 27 and to the underside of which is secured, as by welding, at any position within the axial limits of the ledge according to the rim spacing desired, the radially outer cylindrical flange portion 37 of a connecting ring 35 (36) which comprises a radially inwardly sloping conical portion 38 terminating in a radially outwardly extending flange 39, and the rims being spaced on the flange by a spacer ring 41 the ends of which abut the flanges 39 of the connecting ring 35, 36 with the conical portion 38 of the ring 35 wedged against a conical surface 16 at the free end of the disc flange 13, and the conical portion 38 of the ring 36 wedged by conical surfaces 22 of a series of clamps 19 which are bolted to bosses 17 on the wheel disc 12 adjacent the other end of the flange 13. The bead seats 28 of the rims may taper at an angle of 15 degrees to the wheel axis, and as shown, the clamps 19 may have radially inner cylindrical surfaces to sleeve over the boss end of the disc flange 13, and the spacer ring 41 has scalloped edges 44 to abut the connecting ring flanges 39. The ledges 30 of the rims restrict the drop centres 27 so that only one tyre bead can be accommodated, thereby avoiding tyre shedding on blow-out, and the axial extent of the ledges provides for a range of axial positions at which the connecting rings can be welded and thereby a range of rim spacings.
