Abstract

801,098. Discharging liquid by diaphragm apparatus. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 20, 1955 [Oct. 18, 1954], No. 20987/55. Class 102(2). [Also in Group XXIX] In a tank for liquids, particularly a fuel tank for aircraft, of the diaphragm type (shown in a phantom view in Fig. 2 and in section in Fig. 4) in which air or inert gas supplied at 70a to a pressure cell 42 on one side of diaphragm 36 expels liquid from the fuel cell 20, the side wall 34 of the cell 20 has means for preventing the formation of trapped pockets of liquid in the form of apertured half tubes 60 running from end to end of the fuel cell and secured to the wall 34 by strips 66 (shown partly broken away in Fig. 2) dispased between the apertures 62. These tubes 60 allow free passage of liquid to and from fuel outlet 68a and inlet 69a ; further tubes may be provided on the end walls as is shown for end wall 28. A modification is described and illustrated in which the tank is built from two separate and complete cells detachably laced together so that a doublewalled diaphragm is formed by the flexible walls in contact. The cells are preferably constructed of fabric impregnated with neoprene or like synthetic rubber compound, and reinforcing members 38 and 40 carrying attachment clips 71a may be of the same product as, although thicker than, the tank walls.
