Abstract
809,803. Hose couplings. K.A.C. Ltd. Sept. 9, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 28045/56. Class 99(1). An end-fitting for a corrugated metal pipe 2 having an uncorrugated end portion comprises a sleeve 1 shaped on its internal surface to fit the corrugations and a ferrule 8 fitting within the bore of the tube, the sleeve and ferrule having corresponding tapered surfaces 5, 6, between which the uncorrugated end portion is trapped. The sleeve 1 and ferrule 8 are held together by a sleeve 10 which screws on to a screwthreaded shoulder 14 of the ferrule and traps the end of metallic braid outer reinforcement 11 of the tube 2 against the tapered exterior of the sleeve 1. In a modification, Fig. 2, the outer sleeve 24 is held in place by a screw-threaded ring 26 which forces a separate ring 31 against a shoulder 28 on the ferrule, the extreme end of the reinforcement 29 being trapped between the ring 31 and shoulder 28. In a further modification the ring 31 is omitted and the sleeve 24, ring 26 and ferrule 23 are locked in their finally tightened position by a locking pin passing through aligned bores in the three members. The tube and end-fitting may be made of stainless steel. Where the corrugations are helical the sleeve 1 screws on to the tube but when they are annular the sleeve 1 is divided to enable it to be placed in position. The bore of the uncorrugated end portion of tube 2 may be greater than that of the tube and the ferrule then has a shoulder fitting into this enlarged bore, the tapered surface 6 sloping from this shoulder towards the outer end 15 of the ferrule, with the sleeve 1 being correspondingly tapered.
