Abstract

An insulating material for wrapping electrical conductors comprises an unsupported silicone rubber tape which has been partially cured by heat to obtain the physical characteristics (a) the tape has non-tacky opposite surfaces, (b) the stress strain curve of the tape at room temperature persists with an upward slope from strain equals zero to strain equals 100 per cent, and (c) the partially cured tape will not rupture when stretched 100 per cent and then further heated to 200 DEG C. If desired the tape may be coated on one or both sides with an uncured silicone rubber paste. The preferred siloxane used for the silicone rubber tape is one having a viscosity of at least 106 cs. at 25 DEG C. and having from 1.9 to 2.0 organic radicals per Si atom, at least 50 mol. per cent of the siloxane units being (CH3)2 Si,O the remainder having the formula RR1SiO wherein R and R1 are each phenyl or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 4 C atoms, e.g. methyl, ethyl, vinyl, allyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, iso-butyl and t-butyl. Fillers, e.g. fume silica, silica aerogel, diatomaceous earth, ferric oxide, calcium carbonate and titania, and curing catalysts, e.g. benzoyl and halogenated benzoyl peroxides, t-butyl perbenzoate, t-butyl-peracetate and sulphur may be added. In an example, a composition having a viscosity of 30 X 106 cs. at 25 DEG C. and composed of a dimethylsiloxane gum, fume silica, ferric oxide and benzoyl peroxide, was milled to a soft puttylike consistency and extruded in ribbon form. The ribbon or tape was partially cured by passing it through an air oven at 350 DEG C. and the resulting tape was then coated on both sides with a paste consisting of dimethylsiloxane having a viscosity of 35,000 cs. at 25 DEG C., calcium carbonate, ferric oxide and dichlorobenzoyl peroxide. Shaped conductors, such as coils, with strand insulation and turn insulation in place were stretch wrapped with the coated tape and covered with a protective wrapping, e.g. glass or other fabric, which may be coated or impregnated with varnish or silicone rubber. The insulation was compacted, e.g. by means of clamps and moulding strips, and briefly cured, e.g. by passing an electric current through the coil or by baking in an oven, to set the paste. The insulated coil was then heat cured after removal of the compacting means.
