Abstract
Silver is deposited within the pores of a porous carbon or graphite body for use as an electrical contact element by impregnating the body with molten silver nitrate, e.g. at a temperature of 212-220 DEG C., and decomposing the silver nitrate by heating the impregnated body in the presence of a gaseous reducing agent, e.g. hydrogen or gaseous formaldehyde, at a temperature below the melting-point of silver nitrate. Impregnation may be effected by floating the body in a bath of molten silver nitrate. Impregnation is preferably continued until the body is substantially completely saturated. The porous carbon or graphite body treated may have been incompletely impregnated with polytetrafluorethylene or the mono-, chloro-, bromo-, or iodo-derivative thereof. In the example, a block of carbon was floated on molten silver nitrate at a temperature of 220 DEG C. for a period of 90 mins., and then heated in a sealed container in an atmosphere of hydrogen, at a temperature of 190-210 DEG C. for a period of 1 hour, whereafter the temperature was slowly raised to 300 DEG C. to produce a product containing 15 per cent of silver.
