Abstract

782,900. Roofs; beams. COOPER, D. W. April- 5, 1955 [June 16, 1954], No. 17662/54. Class 20(4) Each half of a portal frame is formed by joining two non-metallic box-girders together. The column A, and rafter B have flanges 1, 2, and 3, 4 respectively blocked at their ends by timber pieces 5, 6, and spaced along their lengths by blocks 7-10, the flanges being covered by webs not shown. The members A, B are united by an elbow C having two arms which enter the members A, B, and consisting of strips 11-14 spaced by struts 15 and spacer 16, the outer portion being reinforced by strips 17, 18 glued to strips 11 and 13. A tongue 20 is received in slots in flanges 1, 3, and strips 11, 13, 17 and 18, and a block 21 is glued to the inside of the angle. The column A, elbow C and lower part of rafter B may be assembled first, the rafter being spliced at 19 to enable the upper part of the rafter B to be assembled on the site. The lower part of column A is shod with a channel section shoe 25 and a pair of half frames are connected together by a bolt 24.
