[Also in Group VI] In a portable dust mask, in which the dust is precipitated electrostatically, the inhaled air is first ionized, by a radio-active substance, and then passed through an electrically charged screen of interleaved plates, rods or wire mesh. In general form, the mask has an air inlet 2, which may be cylindrical or rectangular, around the wall of which a radio-active substance is enclosed in a carrier 3, and there is also a central electrode by means of which a potential difference is set up across the intake tube, to cause motion of the air and improved ionization. The air is directed by deflectors 4, 5, 6 to the precipitator 7, the elements of which are electrically charged by a power source 11, which may be either dry batteries or the rectified output of a multivibrator valve circuit. The precipitator may comprise a number of spaced parallel plates of metal or metallized paper set parallel to the air flow, alternate plates being connected to opposite poles of the voltage source, see Fig. 5 (not shown), or it may comprise two spirally wound spaced plates or a number of concentric cylindrical electrodes, alternate electrodes being of opposite polarity. In a different arrangement a number of fine mesh wire screens or perforated foils are set behind each other transversely to the air flow, alternate screens being oppositely charged. In yet another arrangement a metal or metallized block, having a number of axial ducts 45, Fig. 12, through which the air flows, co-operates with a corresponding number of spaced rods 47, the rods being connected to one pole and the block to the other. In the further device, according to Fig. 14, a number of rods 57, connected to one pole, are interposed in the spaces between a number of similar rods 56 connected to the other pole.
