Abstract
739,897. Pipe couplings. FLIGHT REFUELLING, Ltd. July 22, 1954, No. 21433/54. Addition to 715,503. Class 99 (1). In the spigot member 10 of a spigot-andsocket coupling, particularly for aircraft flight refuelling, according to the parent Specification, in which the movable sleeve member 20 of the valve 18 is secured in the closed position by latch mechanism operated by a rod 26 slidable in the valve stem 18a and projecting from the valve when the latter is closed, the latching rod 26 is hollow and open at its exposed end, and is in communication by a passage 48 with a vent at substantially atmospheric pressure. The sleeve 20 is connected by a spider 21 to a sleeve 22 slidable on the valve stem 18a, has a terminal sealing ring 25, and is lifted from its seat on the fixed valve part 18 by a shoulder 42 of the socket member 11 against the action of a spring 24. The spring-loaded latching rod 26 has a conical shoulder 31 which moves balls 32 into an annular groove 33 of the sleeve 22. The hollow rod 26 communicates through openings 52, 51 in the socket valve 39 with the closed chamber 37 in which the valve 39 is slidably mounted. The vent pipe 50 has a cock 57 which connects it to atmosphere or to a source of de-icing fluid which may thus be supplied to the exposed face of the valve 18 during flight.
