Abstract
721,866. Packing pulverulent material. DOHSE, H. Dec. 18, 1952 [Dec. 19, 1951], No. 32080/52. Class 94 (1). A method of compacting pulverulent material consists in applying a reduction in pressure to a moving foraminous surface in contact with the material to free it from occluded gas, and then stripping the material from said surface and immediately thereafter applying mechanical pressure thereto. A casing 1, Fig. 1, with a powder feed opening 2 houses rotary rollers 3, 3<SP>1</SP> with walls pervious to gas. A pressure reduction is produced within the rollers by a vacuum pump acting through the hollow shafts of the rollers, and occulded gas is removed from the powder which is then led by guide plates 8, 8<SP>1</SP> to pressure rollers 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, and the powder in ribbon form is delivered from a conduit 7. In Fig. 2 an upper roller 13 has flanges 15, 151 which overlap a lower roller 14, and the inner surfaces 15, 16<SP>1</SP> of the flanges are pervious to gas. A pressure reduction is set up through a hollow shaft 17 and occluded gas is removed from the powder which then passes between the rollers to an outlet 20. Alternatively, the upper roller has only one flange as above described, and in a further embodiment the two rollers are horizontal, one of them having a single flange and the other being of channel section, and the powder outlet is positioned diametrically opposite the pressure space between the rollers.
