703,745. Delivering measured quantities of powdered materials. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Feb. 25, 1952 [March 26, 1951], No. 4869/52. Class 106(5) [Also in Group XVII] A machine for packaging powdered material (see Group XVII) comprises a drum 36 mounted on a shaft 34 and rotating in sealing engagement with the lower end of a hopper 58. The drum is formed with a series of peripheral slots 38 into which fit fingers 41 on a spider 42 mounted on the shaft 34 for axial adjustment by means of a nut 41 acting against a spring 43, the slots and fingers defining a series of measuring chambers 83, the capacity of which is variable by adjustment of the spider. The lower end of each chamber is closed by a block of porous material 39, such as sintered metal, through which air may be withdrawn from or discharged into the chamber. A stator 46, fitted with sealing rings 48, 49 and radial seals 50, 51 and 52, Fig. 3, is pressed against the drum by a spring 57 and defines therewith a suction chamber 53 connected by a pipe 54 to a source of vacuum and a pressure chamber 55 connected by a pipe 56 to a source. of pressure air. As the chambers pass under the hopper, powder is drawn into them and compacted by the suction acting through the blocks 39. The contents of each chamber are levelled off by the front of the hopper or a scraper mounted thereon or are retained in the chamber until the associated block 39 passes the seal 51. The powder is then discharged by the air pressure acting through the block 39.
