Abstract

716,892. Rotary pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1953 [Jan. 7, 1952], No. 451/52. Class 110(2) A rotary pump a, Fig. 2, comprises in combination a rotor i mounted concentrically within a cylindrical bore b in the body part of said pump to define therewith at least one working chamber, a spring-loaded reciprocatory abutment j contained in said body part intermediate the inlet and outlet passages f, g respectively, a cover attached to one side of the pump body part and a driving spindle e keyed to the rotor and having one end disposed within an axial bore of the rotor with sufficient freedom of clearance to accommodate a small lack of alignment between the said rotor and a bearing which supports the spindle. The pump a may constitute a feed pump for supplying the fuel injection pump n of an internal combustion engine; the pumps a, n being interconnected by two ported fittings p, q which communicate with the passages f, g respectively. Each ported fitting, Fig. 3, is in two parts screwthreaded together; one part u being screwthreaded in the pump n whilst the other part has a head y for securing the cover h in position. The spindle is keyed to the rotor by a peg m which engages a groove or opposed grooves in the rotor body. The abutment j may constitute a relief valve, in which case a passage t is provided as shown or a groove is formed in the face of the abutment or in the contiguous face of the body part adjacent to the inlet. Alternatively, a passage is formed in the cover between the passage g and the chamber s to permit the pressure of the liquid in the passage g to augment the action of the spring k when the abutment is not adapted to function as a relief valve. The pump may be modified to rotate in either direction, in which case the passage t is defined by a groove in the adjacent face of the cover h and an additional groove is provided in the outer face of the cover; said additional groove being adapted to register with the passage g when the cover is reversed.
