Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a fuel injection pump provided with injection pistons 15 in the bore 14 of a rotary distributer 12, the fuel is supplied by a feed pump 24 coupled to the distributer and the flow of fuel to the bore 14 is controlled by a valve member 30 subject to the output pressure of the feed pump via a passage 32 and a groove 33. The feed pump output pressure is controlled by a centrifugally operable relief valve 39. The relief valve (39), Fig. 5 (not shown), is mounted in a transverse bore (38) in the distributer (12) and comprises a first part (40) provided with a sector shaped head (41), an axial bore (42) and ports (43, 44), which communicate with the transverse bore and the inlet of the feed pump, respectively, and a second part (39a) housing a compression spring (46) which biases the first part (40). In operation, the position of the first valve part (40) is determined by the equilibrium of the forces due to the centrifugal force, the spring (46) and the output pressure of the feed pump, acting on the part. In further embodiments, Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown), the relief valve (39) comprises a single part biased by a pair of compression springs acting between the distributer (12) and the sector shaped head of the part.
