Abstract
A composition for combating organisms injurious to plants, and more particularly for the treatment of potato sickness, comprises a benzyl halide, cyanide or thiocyanide, containing as a substituent in the nucleus a halogen atom or a nitro, cyano or thiocyano group or an aliphatic chain containing such an atom or group, preferable in the para position, in admixture with a carrier, said carrier consisting of a powdered or granular material or a liquid which is a non-solvent for the benzyl halide, cyanide or thiocyanide but in which said substance is emulsified or dispersed. A mixture of the ortho-, meta-, and para-isomers of the active constituent may be employed, the activity being approximately the same as that of the para compound. Specified benzyl compounds are p-nitric benzyl chloride, the mixture of isomers obtained or nitrating benzyl chloride, p-bromo benzyl chloride, p-nitro benzyl cyanide, meta cyano benzyl thiocyanide, w, w1 dichloro 1:4dimethyl benzene, w chloro w1 cyano 1:2-dimethyl benzene and p-nitro xylyl bromide. The carrier may be a soil improver or fertilizer.
