700,004. Generating combustion products under pressure. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Dec. 8, 1950 [Dec. 12, 1949], No. 31855/49. Class 51 (1) In a jacketed type of combustion chamber in which the flame tube comprises a number of overlapping sections or rings which form ducts or nozzles for the flow of cooling and dilution air or other gas, at least one section or ring situated where the conditions are most arduous is formed of more highly heat resisting material than the other sections and this section is formed of a number of separate segments. The flame tube in Fig. 1 comprises six similar frustoconical rings 54 which overlap to form air inlet ducts 55 and each ring 54 is formed of separate overlapping plates 92, Fig. 2, which are supported at their lower ends by projections 98 on supporting rings 94 and a stud 93 is secured to each plate 92 adjacent the upper edge thereof, the studs passing through slots 97 in the lower edges of the adjacent plates 92 of the next upper ring and through bores in the supporting rings 94. Sleeves 96 are placed over the studs to hold the plates at the required distance apart to form the air inlet ducts 55. In another embodiment, the lower ends of the plates are pivotally mounted on bolts, and links are pivotally connected to the centre of each plate and to adjusting rings so that axial movement of the latter causes the plates to pivot about the lower edges thereof and so varies the inlet areas of the air ducts. The section or rings exposed to the most arduous conditions may be formed of refractory ceramic material or of heat resisting metal alloy, while the other sections or rings are formed of heat resisting metal alloy or of ferritic steel respectively.
