Abstract

708,055. Ornamenting. DUNLOP RUBBER CO, Ltd. June 12, 1951, [June 23, 1950], No. 15680/50. Class 93 [Also in Group VIII] An .air-permeable flexible material having a friction surface or decorative raised pattern thereon is prepared by superimposing a perforated screen upon a fibrous backing, e.g. cotton stockinette, soft rayon, woven glass fibres, or paper, feeding a heat-gellable dispersion of polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer thereof, e.g. with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, in a plasticizer therefor containing 40-65 per cent of the plasticizer, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, through the perforations in the screen, stripping the screen from the backing sheet and heating to fuse the compound on the backing sheet. The friction surface may be in the form of discrete spots and the dispersion may be fed through the screen by spreading knife. The dispersion may be gelled at 80-100‹C and fused at 180‹C; 5-6 per cent of the polymer or copolymer may be dissolved in heated plasticizer with a heat stabilizer, e.g. lead carbonate or stearate, and after cooling, the remainder of the polymer or copolymer may be mixed with this solution in a roller mill; pigments, e.g. burnt umber, may be added. A continuous method of operation by contacting a perforated screen, in the form of an endless belt, with a moving fabric is described.
