Classes 78 (1) and 78 (2) In conveying apparatus of the kind in which articles such as electric cables and tubes are moved longitudinally by placing them between gripper members 15, Fig. 1, on one or more pairs of endless chains 1, each gripper member comprises a closed hollow member filled with air or other gas at atmospheric or higher pressure which is resilient and conforms to the shape of the article when this is gripped. As shown in Figs. 2, 6, each member 15 comprises a box made of rubber or rubber-like material reinforced with fabric material and filled with air or gas introduced through a valve 15a. Each box is secured to two metal carriers 14 supported between a pair of endless chains by chain pivot pins 11 having threaded ends engaging in the carriers and secured by screws 12a. Flanges 16 on the box are secured in recesses 19 in the carriers by metal plates 20 attached by screws 20a. The box may be made in two halves each formed with a circumferential flange, the two parts after being partly cured as 'separate parts being placed together and the curing completed. Upstanding ribs on the box are engaged by the sides of the arched parts of the two carriers to provide a positive driving engagement between the carriers and the box. In modifications in which only one gripper member is carried by the upper pair of chains and one by the lower pair, the gripper member consists of an endless length of tubing or a length of tubing having its ends connected by a pin passing through eyes attached to its ends. The chain rollers 2, 4, 6, 8 are guided by plates 26 along the operative runs of the conveyers.
