Abstract

699,105. Reciprocating motors. HARDINGE, J. H. C. VON D. Oct. 17, 1951 [Dec. 15, 1950; Jan. 17, 1951], Nos. 30634/50 and 1301/51. Class 35. (Also in Group XXVIII] An electromagnetically-operated diaphragm pump has an armature 20 pivotally mounted about one end thereof and vibrated by the magnetic flux produced in a coil 14 supplied with alternating or discontinuous current, and the armature has a mechanical moment which is within ten per cent either way of that which results in minimum current in the coil whereby a substantial resonant effect is obtained. The coil is mounted on one leg 140 of a. laminated soft iron core 115 carried by a base-plate 11 of insulating material. The armature which may also be laminated is held in position by a rubber band 21 passing over projections 22 on the leg 140. A flexible diaphragm 68, clamped to the armature is secured by a split-ring 70 to a shallow tray 55 forming the pump chamber. The latter is secured to a block 43 of plastic material adjustably supported, by means of a screw-and-nut 53, 52, within a recess 42 of the core, whereby the height of the pump chamber and hence the pressure of the armature on the diaphragm is adjustable so that resonance of the vibrating system can be obtained. Air is sucked into the pump chamber through a port 60 and flap valve 61 and is delivered through a port 63, flap valve 64 and through a passage in the block 43 to an outlet pipe 66. In another embodiment the armature is not attached to the diaphragm and the pump body is partitioned to form an inlet chamber, pumping chamber and delivery chamber. Specification 699,096, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
