Abstract

696,144. Bolted joints. COLQUHOUN, C. B. H., MOON, D. I. B., and McALPINE & SONS, Ltd., Sir R. Dec. 13, 1951 [Dec. 13, 1950], No. 30478/50. Class 83 (iv). A pre-cast concrete beam 1, Fig. 2, is joined to a pre-cast column or beam 2 by headed bolts 9 passing through holes 8 formed in the column 2 during casting, the bolts 9 directly or indirectly engaging screw-threaded elements 3 embedded in the beam 1 during casting. In one example the screw-threaded elements 3 are internallythreaded tubes with flared ends 5 to facilitate entry of the bolts 9 and having plates 6 secured at the inner end and embedded in the beam. Reinforcement rods 7 may further be curled over at the ends to engage the plate 6 for additional security. A recess 4 in the end of the beam 1 is surrounded by damp-excluding pads 10 of lead, steel, &c., and is rammed with concrete 12 before tightening the bolts 9 so that a unitary concrete member is formed. In a modification internally-threaded sleeves 14, Fig. 3, are supported in the recess 4 on the threaded ends of rag bolts 13 cast into the beam 1. In another modification threaded sleeves 15, Fig. 4, are screwed on the threaded ends of the steel reinforcement members 7.
