Abstract
694,212. Railway track braking apparatus. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS - G.R.S., Ltd. Dec. 20, 1951 [Jan. 30, 1951]. No. 2327/51. Class 103 (i). In track braking apparatus for railway vehicles of the type in which braking rails arranged alongside the running rails are moved into engagement with the wheels of vehicles, the operating mechanism is such that the planes of the braking surfaces of the rails remain substantially parallel throughout the range of their movement. This is accomplished by the use of a mechanism, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, comprising L-shaped members 1 and 2, to the arms of which is pivoted a bell-crank member 5 so that a force F applied as shown causes a parallel movement of the rails 3 and 4, the reaction between the members 1 and 2 being resisted by a roller 8. In a practical application, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the braking rail 13 on the inner side of the wheel is secured at the ends of the vertical limbs of two parallel L-shaped plates 16, 17, a pneumatic or hydraulic actuator cylinder 20 being secured between their opposite ends. The plates are connected by pins 21, 22 having rollers 23, 24 which run on tracks secured to the tops of the sleepers. The outer braking rail 12 is carried by a pair of parallel plates 18 and 19 which have a horizontal limb extending between the plates 16 and 17 and engaging the underside of a reaction roller (not shown) mounted centrally on the pin 22. The plates 18 and 19 are also connected by a pin 30, the position of which in a slot may be adjusted by nuts 31 on a drawbolt 29. The brake is applied by actuation of cylinder 20 which by moving upwardly the outer ends of two parallel plates 33 causes the pairs of plates 16. 17 and 18, 19 to be moved to engage the braking rails on the wheels.
