Abstract

A mixture of aliphatic alcohols having 3 and 4 carbon atoms per molecule, containing acetals, carbonyl compounds and organic oxides as impurities, is separated by distillation into a fraction containing the alcohols normally boiling below 100 DEG C. and a fraction containing the remaining alcohols; and the two fractions are separately subjected to azeotropic distillation with methyl cyclohexane so as to obtain from each of the fractions an azeotropic mixture with methyl cyclohexane of the alcohols present in the fraction substantially free from impurities. The process is particularly applicable to a crude mixture of n-propanol, and n-, sec., and iso-butanols obtained by the partial oxidation of butane or mixtures of propane and butane. Preferably the initial distillation is conducted so as to obtain a fraction which boils from about 96 to 103 DEG C. and another fraction which boils from 103 to about 120 DEG C. Methyl cyclohexane may be separated from the azeotropic mixtures by combining them and subjecting the bulk to distillation with methanol; the methanol forms an azeotropic mixture with the methyl cyclohexane which distils off, leaving behind the purified alcohols. The mixture of purified alcohols is then subjected to ordinary fractionation for the recovery of the individual alcohols.
