Abstract
659,162. Electric welding. GUSTAFSON, W., and ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. June 2, 1949, No. 14817. [Class 83 (iv)] A compressed air operated bolt welding tool having three support legs 20, and in which the bolt is moved away from the structure for initiating a welding arc, is characterized by two interengaging pistons 4, 6, the piston 6 being integral with the bolt clamp 7, adjustment of the pistons being accomplished by enclosing oil in a chamber 17 between the pistons so that they form a rigid unit, the length of which is shorter than the distance between the structure and an adjustable stop means by an amount equal to the welding arc gap. Compressed air enters the tool through channel 1 and moves a transverse piston 10 against a spring 23 so that a cam 19 on a cover 12 attached to piston 4 is depressed against the action of a spring 18 by being forced out of a groove 9 in the piston 10. The air also flows through channels 2 and 3 and pushes piston 6 against the shoulder 6a. Piston 4 after its initial movement due to cam 19 is prevented from moving further by the spring 18. The air also enters channels 11 and operates a valve pin 13 which opens a ball valve 15 so that chamber 17 fills with oil from chamber 16. With a bolt inserted in the clamp 7 and the tool in position the compressed air supply is cut off and the channel 1 connected to atmosphere by operating means 21. The ball valve 15 retains the oil in chamber 17 so forming an incompressible junction between the bolt and the cam 19. The piston 10 returns to its initial position and a spring 24 forces the cam 19 into the groove 9 of the piston 10 so that the bolt is moved away from the structure a distance equal to the depth of the groove 9 and an arc is now initiated. The groove 9 can be arranged eccentric so that by rotating the piston 10 the arc-forming movement of the bolt can be adjusted. The compressed air is allowed to re-enter the channel 1 whereupon the bolt is pressed against the structure and fused in position.
