Abstract
Unsaturated higher fatty acids and esters are continuously hydrogenated at 60-250 DEG C. by flowing them through a zone into which a suspended nickel containing catalyst and hydrogen gas are continuously introduced and mechanically agitating the mixture so that hydrogenation occurs at a rate not less than that represented by a point on the curve B of Fig. 7 which corresponds to the temperature employed, and retarding movement of insufficiently hydrogenated material out of the zone. Glycerides, fatty esters from petroleum fractions, fatty components of tall oil may all be partially or completely hydrogenated, but specified glycerides are cottonseed, soyabean, peanut, corn, linseed, coconut, olive, palm, fish and whale oils, tallow and lard. The nickel containing catalyst may be promoted by metals (or their oxides) such as copper, chromium, cobalt, zirconium or thorium. A preferred apparatus for the process is identical with that in Specification 658,189. <PICT:0658188/III/1>
