[Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] A ball and socket connection 24, 32, Fig. 2, is provided for an adjustable-angle thermometer which comprises a bulb 18, a stem supported in a case 10 and a flexible capillary tube 16, passing through the ball and socket and connecting the bulb with the stem. The socket member comprises a spherical metal ball 24 integral with a sleeve 26 extending between sleeves 28, 30 of the case 10 and is slotted through at right angles in its lower portion by four vertical slots 42, Fig. 4, to form four finger-like members at 90 degrees spaced relation whose ends converge around the ball 32. The ball 32 is integral with a tubular arm 34 having a neck 35 of square cross-section the arm extending into a sleeve 36 forming part of the mounting means for the well 20 containing the bulb 18. The slots 42 are of a width to pass conveniently the square-shaped neck 35 of the tubular member 34 when the thermometer is swivelled to its adjusted position. The ball 32 is provided with a pin 44 to prevent axial rotation with respect to the socket. The thermometer may be clamped in its adjusted position by means of a nut 40 which is provided with a suitable upper surface to seat the socket member 24.
