611,799. Drilling machines; assembling force-fits. BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO., Ltd., and TRIBE, T. F. May 9, 1946, No. 14001. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A machine for drilling timber joists comprises a drilling machine whose feed mechanism is actuated by an air cylinder 18, which also actuates means 22 to thrust a metal pin into a previously drilled hole in the joist on the return stroke, and gauging and locating means to position the pins at.predetermined intervals as required in the building-up of lattice girders. When one pin has been inserted the joist 14 is pushed forward to engage the pin with a finger 32 which opens a valve to release air from a cylinder 28 which allows a gauge 34 to be forced upwards by spring pressure to locate the pin. A foot switch 26 is then depressed and air valves 27, 29 and 31 operate in sequence to recharge a cylinder 28 and return the gauge 34 and finger 32 to the normal position, to operate a work-clamp 13 and to operate the air cylinder 18 sliding on a fixed piston 19. The cylinder 18 carries a rack 16 which feeds an independently-driven drill into the joist until a limit switch is operated and the motion reversed. On the reverse stroke a ram 22, also carried on the cylinder, thrusts a pin (from a container) 21 into the hole. The valves are automatically reset on the return stroke. A dash-pot 24 damps the acceleration of the drill when the air first enters the cylinder.
