Abstract
Multi-filament yarns of highly polymeric linear aromatic esters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, are sized by impregnating them with an aqueous film-forming solution of a protein, e.g. a globulin, prolamine, glutelin, phosphoprotein or denatured protein. The solution may contain solubilizing agents such as caustic soda, ammonia, salts, metallic oxides or triethanolamine oleate, and plasticizers such as glycerol, triethylene glycol, ethanol formamide, a polyethylene oxide, a condensate of ethylene oxide with a long chain alcohol or with an alkylated phenol, an ethanolamine and an ethanolamine salt. In examples the sizing composition comprises: (1) an aqueous solution of casein containing ammonia and a cetyl alcohol-ethylene oxide condensation product; (2) an aqueous solution of ground nut protein containing glycerol, polyethylene oxide and ethanolamine; (3) an aqueous solution of zein containing triethanolamine oleate, ethanol formamide and an octyl cresol-ethylene oxide condensation product.ALSO:A size suitable for impregnating polymeric aromatic ester yarns, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate yarns, comprises an aqueous film-forming solution of a protein, e.g., a globulin, prolamine, glutelin, phosphoprotein or denatured protein. The solution may contain solubilizing agents such as caustic soda, ammonia, weak acids, salts, metallic oxides or triethanolamine oleate, and plasticizers such as glycerol, triethylene glycol, ethanol formamide, a polyethylene oxide, a condensate of ethylene oxide with a long chain alcohol or with an alkylated phenol, an ethanolamine and an ethanolamine salt. In examples the size comprises (1) an aqueous solution of casein containing ammonia and a cetyl alcoholethylene oxide product, (2) an aqueous solution of groundnut protein containing glycerol, polyethylene oxide and ethanolamine, (3) an aqueous solution of zein containing triethanolamine oleate, ethanol formamide and an octyl cresol-ethylene oxide condensation product.
