Abstract

619,051. Twisting glass &c. fibres. THURSTON, A. P. (Owens-Corning Fiberglass Corporation). Feb. 28, 1946, No. 6236. [Class 120(ii)] [Also .in Group XXIII] In a combined attenuating, winding and stranding device for glass or similar fibres, of the type comprising a rotary cage whereon the fibres are wound tangentially and discharged longitudinally, two alternating series of longitudinal bars provided on the cage are subject to relative radial and longitudinal movement as the cage rotates, so that convolutions of the fibres are alternately supported first by bars of one series, then by bars of the other series, and are advanced along the cage by the relative longitudinal movement of the bars. As shown, the bars 17 secured to the heads 18, 19 are rotated about the axis A-A of the fixed shaft 14 by a drive to the pulley 28; the bars 16, alternating therewith and driven thereby, are secured to a tube 15 rotatable about an axis B which is offset vertically from the axis A-A (to provide the relative radial movement between the bars 16 and 17), and inclined thereto in a horizontal plane (to cause slight longitudinal movement of the bars 16 in the direction of the axis A-A, such movement being towards the head 18 while they are holding the fibres clear of the bars 17 at the top of the cage, and towards the head 19 as they themselves are retracted clear of the fibres at the bottom of the cage). The bars 17 may be of inwardly facing U-shaped cross-section, and may be secured in slots 20 in the peripheries of the heads 18, 19; their open inner sides may be closed by caps welded &c. thereto. Molten glass streams from orifices in a bushing arranged above the cage are attentuated by the latter as the resultant filaments are wound thereon, and after longitudinal removal the twisted fibres may be further compacted by a twisting turbine before being wound into a package, Fig. 1 (not shown).
