618,847. Filling leather. KELLY, D. B., SHARPHOUSE, J. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1946, No. 34093. [Class 76] Leather is filled by subjecting hides and skins to a tanning operation in conjunction with a treatment with an aqueous dispersion of polythene. The treatment may be effected before or after tanning. According to one example depickled New Zealand sheepskins as pH 5-7 are treated with a 30 per cent aqueous dispersion of a polythene of softening point 110‹C. and viscosity at 190‹C. of 3,500 poises repickled and chrome tanned. In another example rough tanned East Indian sheepskins after stripping in a solution of sodium bicarbonate and washing are treated with a dispersion of a polythene similar to the above and subsequently chrome tanned.
