Abstract
1354506 Tanning hides RICHARD HODGSON & SONS Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45248/70 Heading C6C Tanning of hides and skins is performed by a chromium salt, e.g. basic chromium sulphate, with powdered calcium carbonate in the form of finely ground chalk known as whiting. Hides which have been delimed and bated may be pickled in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, calcium formate and sulphuric acid, and then tanned by the addition of the chromium salt and whiting, or the pickling stage may be omitted. In another process, kip leather imported in the vegetable tanned condition is treated with an acid synthetic tannin, then washed and drained and tanned with the chromium salt, whiting and common salt and finally dyed and fat-liquored, and in a further process, imported pickled sheepskins are, after drumming with a common salt solution, tanned with the chromium salt and whiting, after which they are suitable for vegetable retanning.
