Abstract

617,224. Pistons. RICARDO, H. R., HOLT, G. -A., and WATTS, R. Aug. 21, 1946, No. 24994. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] Relates to cooling of a trunk piston of the kind wherein oil is delivered into the piston interior from the end of a hollow connecting rod. As shown, a trunk piston comprises a crown A, Fig. 1, from which projects a skirt B carrying gudgeon-pin bosses D and within the piston is formed a trough F comprising an inwardly extending wall C and an axially extending lip E terminating short of the crown so as to leave a slot through which oil from the connecting rod can enter the 'trough and through which surplus oil escapes to the open end of the skirt; the trough is partitioned by two or more walls D<1> extending axially between the crown and the trough and the cooling oil washes thereover. Part of the oil escaping from the trough F drains down ducts G to the gudgeonpin boss bearing surfaces and the rest is deflected by an inner skirt C<1> down the exterior of the connecting rod. In a modification, the lip and inner skirt are formed by a tubular member E<1>, E<2>, Fig. 5, bolted to the wall C<2> and in a further modification the lip E, Fig. 8, is conical and an annular projection A<1> extends from the crown A to form an inverted trough A<2>. Alternatively, the inner face of the crown may be formed with a cusp-like projection located centrally or eccentrically of the piston axis. Inwardly projecting ribs M also assist cooling.
