Abstract

659,127. Pistons. BUTLER, J. F., PURDAY, H. F. P., and REBBECK, Sir F. E. April 8, 1949, No. 9581. [Class 122(i)] A composite piston having the crown of the piston body covered with a metal crown unit of greater heat resisting capacity than the piston body and extending at least to the periphery of the piston, the crown unit being integral with an annular piston ring carrier, piston ring grooves being provided both in the ring carrier and the piston body, comprises a body portion 4 cast into a crown unit 1, connected to a ring carrying portion 2 by ribs 3. In a modification the unit 1 may have a cylindrical extension connecting with the portion 2 with or without ribs 3. The ribs 3 may be replaced by a slotted conical member.
