Abstract
<PICT:0608436/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0608436/IV(a)/2> In the production and/or treatment of artificial threads in which the thread is conducted in a helical path around a pair of inclined rollers, at least one of which is positively driven, which are disposed one above the other and on which the thread is subjected to successive treatments such as completion of coagulation, washing, drying and bleaching, at those parts of the traverse where the thread is wet and under only slight tension the peripheral speed of the upper roller is adapted to be greater than that of the lower roller by providing a proportionate increase in the diameter of the upper roller at those parts (Figs. 2 and 3). The thread is thereby tensioned sufficiently to maintain an even spacing of the helical loops, but insufficiently to exceed the elastic limit of the thread at that particular degree of wetness. Alternatively, if the thread is in a wet condition throughout all its traverse, then the rollers may be of the same diameter and the angular velocity of the upper roller is increased over that of the lower roller. The proportionate increases in diameter of the upper roller are effected by varying the amount of rubber or other plastic coating applied to the roller core. The rollers may be both cylindrical, conical, frusto-conical or stepped.
