Abstract

605,135. Ordnance cartridges; explosive compositions. PRING, J. N. Dec. 14, 1945, No. 33974. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to primers for insertion in ordnance cartridges comprising a base member having a percussion cap-holder and a detachable magazine for the priming composition, and consists in providing a magazine primer casing in which the wall is of self-combustible rapid burning composition preferably of nitrocellulose gelatinised with liquid explosive, e.g. nitro-glycerine. The composition may also contain a stabilizer, such as di-ethyl diphenyl urea. Three alternative compositions are given suitable for preparing gelatinised sheet from which the casing C may be formed as a tube of the required wall thickness, using the solventless cordite manufacture technique. The casing C is attached to a brass primer head A by using a collapsable former to expand the casing into a recess K in the head A. A cap E of cordite is pushed into the casing C to close the rear end. The priming composition D is put into the casing C and a cap J similar to E inserted. A final closure G is placed on the forward end of the casing C. A cement may be used to hold the caps and closure in position. The primer head A has an internally threaded opening to receive a plug H carrying a small primer P and a percussion cap or electrically-fired primer F, the plug H being screwed into position after the primer magazine is inserted in the cartridge. Some dimensions are given for guns of 4.7 in. and 5.25 in. calibre.
