Abstract
Organic solvent soluble cellulose ethers are prepared by etherifying alkali cellulose with an etherification agent in the presence of a liquid paraffinic hydrocarbon diluent which has been purified so as to be substantially free from aromatic and unsaturated constituents and which is present in an amount sufficient to ensure that the fibrous form of the alkali cellulose is maintained throughout its conversion to cellulose ether. Examples of paraffinic hydrocarbons are kerosene and ligroin. The resulting fibrous cellulose ether is separated and washed. It may be bleached in an aqueous medium such that its fibrous condition is preserved throughout. In an example, fibrous alkali cellulose is treated with ethyl chloride in the presence of a purified paraffin fraction (b.p. 200 DEG C.) in an autoclave at 130 DEG C. for 4 hours, separated, washed with water and bleached with an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite. The product is insoluble in hot and cold water, but soluble in 80 per cent toluene with 20 per cent butanol.
