Abstract

594,059. Cathode materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROOKSBY,H.P., NOBLE, S. H., BRANSON, W. G. S., and HERRIOTT, J. S. June 25, 1945, No. 16168. Addition to 577,599. [Class 39 (i)] A thermionic cathode according to the parent Specification and comprising activating material consisting mainly of barium thorate contains in addition tungsten and/or molybdenum. The material is prepared by adding 3 per cent of tungsten by weight to a mixture of barium carbonate, calcium carbonate and thoria in the molecular proportions of 2.5 : 1 : 2.5 respectively, mixing with a binder such as gum tragacanth and extruding in the form of rods..It is then heated to 1600‹ C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen in 7 minutes, kept at this temperature for 10 minutes and cooled to room temperature in a further 10 minutes. In this example the tungsten may be replaced wholly or in part by molybdenum and the calcium carbonate wholly or in part by strontium carbonate.
