Abstract

579,638. Pipe laying. STANTON IRONWORKS CO., Ltd., and CORNELIUS, F. B. Feb. 8, 1945, No. 3233. [Class 99 (ii)] Relates to the laying of pipes in tunnels or headings only a few inches larger than the outside diameter of the pipe, by supporting the pipe a with a spigot c and jointing ring b at one end of the heading, Fig. 2, conveying the second pipe e through the heading by means of the carriage f, having a table g vertically adjustable by the screw k, engaging the socket d over the spigot c, inserting the strap h supported by two jacks, Fig. 4, removing the carriage, supplying concrete or other blocks to support the new pipe section and removing the strap and jacks. This process is repeated until the correct length of pipe is layed. The carriage, whose adjusting screw must be at the rear, may have three wheels when the floor of the heading is concreted, or may, if concrete is not used, have four wheels to 'run on a narrow gauge rail track. If it is required to lay the pipes from the centre of the heading a special section with two spigot ends is first layed and the aforesaid method may then be applied from both ends of the heading.
