Abstract
574,877. Making cartridge cases &c. RAVEN, W. H., and HERON, W. H. Nov. 17, 1942, No. 16263. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Brazing; joints.-Cartridge cases and like containers of which the length/diameter ratio is great and of which the base thickness is great compared to that of the walls, have the base and wall parts separately formed of ferrous material and brazed together. The body c, Fig. 10, is cupped from a disc in, say, four draws with intermediate annealing as required, and the bottom is punched out in a fifth operation. The base e is cold forged from a blank in two stages to the frame d<2>, Fig. 8, and is finished by machining. The base may be machined from bar stock and as finished is a press fit in the body c. On assembly, a thin copper ring f is introduced and brazing is effected by passing the assembly through a conveyer-type furnace. After brazing, a final draw is given to stiffen the case by work hardening, the stress in the joint during the drawing serving to test its strength. Tapering, necking, trimming and final machining the head follow in the usual manner. In a modification, the base is formed with a stem j, Fig. 12, that passes through a hole formed in the bottom of the case after the last draw and receives a ring that embodies the extractor groove and is secured both by riveting at j<1> and by brazing from the ring k. The cases are finished by chromium-plating preferably over nickel. The body may be made from welded or solid drawn tubing.
