Abstract

546,016. Making valves. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. June 8, 1940, No. 10052. Convention date, March 25. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging; pipe-end closing.-A poppet valve having a hollow stem containing coolant e.g. as in Specification 224,288, [Class 7 (iv)], is made preferably from a rod having a diameter equal to that of the finished valve stem, by forming a hollow valve blank B, Fig. 4, e.g. by forging and drilling, and applying axial pressure to the free end of the stem 12 to upset it and close the bore. The portion to be closed is heated before inserting in the die 16. If easily oxidizable coolant 22 is to be introduced before upsetting, the bore may first be charged with nitrogen or other inert or reducing gas and be flooded therewith during the operation. If the coolant is not so introduced, the upset end is drilled axially and taper reamed at 28, Fig. 8, the coolant 22 is introduced, and the hole 28 is closed by a plug 30 preferably welded as in Specification 379,832. In either case a disc 26 may be welded on and the valve machined to final form.
