Abstract

561,288. Feeding webs. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1942, No. 18146. Convention date, Jan. 13, 1942. [Class 100 (i)] In a web-renewing operation for a printing or other machine, the new roll 24, Fig. 2, is provided at its leading end with a layer of dry adhesive 13 of the kind which will not adhere to an uncoated web but will strongly adhere to a similar adhesive coating, and, after the roll is brought into rotation by contact with the running web 22, a sheet 70, Fig. 5, coated on one side with a similar adhesive and on the other side with an ordinary adhesive 72, is caused to adhere, by the latter coating, to the running web so that its layer of dry adhesive contacts with the layer 13 to join the webs together. The sheet 70 is of a length at least as long as the circumference of the roll 24 and is wrapped round a cylinder 35 carried by an arcuate frame 36 fixed to a shaft 37 which may be turned by a reversible electric motor 38 and gearing 40, 41 to bring the cylinder 35 into the operative position shown or to turn the frame 36 down into an inoperative position. Cooperating pressure rollers 53 which serve to press the web 22 against the cylinder 35 are carried by arms 54 pivoted to a frame 56 which is operated simultaneously with the frame 36 by a gear 61 meshing with the gear 41. Limit switches 66, 67 operated by pins 68, 69 on the gear 40 stop the motor 38 when the frames 36, 56 are in the inoperative and operative positions respectively. The cylinder 35 is driven at web speed by chains 43 on the frame driven from a press shaft 51 through a clutch 50 and chain 48. The ordinary adhesive 72 extends only partly round the cylinder 35 leaving a gap 73 opposite to which on the shaft 42 of the cylinder is a switch contact 63 which at each revolution of the cylinder engages a fixed contact 64 in a circuit containing a press button switch and a solenoid 58 which is adapted to turn the arms 54 against the action of a spring 57 to press the web 22 against the sheet 70 on the cylinder 35. The switch 63, 64 ensures that the web 22 is first pressed against the uncoated part of the sheet 70 in the gap 73.
