Feeding webs.-A web-renewing mechanism for a rotary printing-machine having a magazine reel stand is provided with a visual indicator driven through reduction gear from the new reel to indicate a suitable period during the rotation of the reel for the manual actuation of means adapted to cause the expiring web to be pressed into contact with an adhesive portion of the new reel. The reels are carried by frames 3 rotatably mounted on stands 2 and each reel is provided with an indicator comprising a disc 64, driven by a 4-1 reduction gear from the spindle of the reel. Differently coloured arcs 69, 67 represent the pasted and unpasted portions of the circumference of the reel and the leading end of the web is so positioned that the passage of the arc 67 past a fixed pointer 68 corresponds to the passage of the unpasted portion of the reel past devices 40 serving to press the expiring web b into contact with the new reel, any time during that period being suitable to actuate the devices 40. The roll a is brought to the position shown by intermittently operating the motor, which rotates the frames 3 by means of a jogging motor until the reel, by engaging an arm 31, actuates a switch 25 to open the circuit of the jogging motor. The switch 25 simultaneously opens a circuit to de-energize a solenoid 36 and closes a switch in a circuit containing a press-button switch and a solenoid 48. The armatures of the solenoids 36, 48 are connected together and to a lever 41 connected by a link 42 to an arm 43 on a shaft carrying a number of flexible arms 39 terminating in the pressing devices 40. The deenergization of the solenoid 36 allows the devices 40 to fall by gravity to the position shown in full lines. When the joining of the webs is to be effected, the press-button switch is closed at a proper time as shown by the indicator arc 67 thereby exciting the solenoid 48 to cause the devices 40 to press the web b against the reel a. The movement of the core of the solenoid 48 is also caused to close a circuit to a solenoid 55 and thereby operate, by means of a, strip 57, a shaft 59 so as to rotate a number of flexible arms 60 to bring a knife 61 carried thereby into contact with the old web b to sever it. In a modification the devices 40 are actuated mechanically by connections from a hand-lever, one of the connections being adapted to operate a switch controlling the solenoid 55. The feed of the web from the reels is controlled by endless belts such as the belts 6 or the belt system described in Specification 309,819.
