569,178. Lubricating cutting-tools. TAYLOR (CHEMICALS), Ltd., E., and HANDFOR.D, C. Nov. 3, 1943, No. 18190. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group III] In machining magnesium and its alloys, a cutting fluid is used consisting of an emulsion of water in oil, the percentage of oil being preferably between 60 and 85. An agent or agents may be added to the emulsion to decrease the penetrability of the oil by the water still further to reduce the action of the water on the metal. The materials added may form a resistant film at the surface of the metal. Agents may be added to the water to reduce its deleterious effect on the metal. The emulsion may be oil 73.5, water 24.85, oleic acid 1.5 and ammonia solution 0.15 per cent. As modified to decrease the penetrability of the oil, an example is oil 64, paraffin wax 4, oleic acid 2, sodium hydroxide 0.35, and water 29.65 per cent. An example with agents added to reduce the deleterious effect of the water, is oil 65.5, oleic acid 2.5, potassium hydroxide 0.45, pyrogallol 0.2, and water 31,25 per cent. The various hydroxides may be replaced by magnesium &c. hydroxide.
