567,988. Making girders. FROMSON, B. W. May 11, 1943, No. 7483. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion ; work-holders.-Openwork joists and girders with welded connections between the compression, web, and tension members are made by assembling -and temporarily securing the parts in their correct relative positions, then mounting them for turning about a horizontal longitudinal axis so that by turning the assembly about this axis each weld may be made down hand. The members 15-17 may be secured in assembled position by adjustable clamps 14 in a frame 10 provided with end pivots 11 resting in notched pedestals 13, or the pivots may be carried intermediately by cross-bars fixed to the back of the frames so that extension frames may be fitted to suit long joists, the back of the frame being provided with rods carrying adjustable counterbalance weights. , The parts may be secured to the frame before mounting the frame on the pedestals. The upper ends of the pedestals may have hinged clamps to grip the pivots to secure the jig in any desired position. The jig may also be formed as an openwork structure provided with clips at locations clear of the joints. In a further form, the assembled parts of the joists which may be of curved form may be tack welded together to make the structure self-supporting, and may then be secured by slotted bolts-28 and wedges 27 to two or more jigs comprising spoked halfwheel segments 26. The jigs may be mounted to rock on stands carrying pairs of rollers 31 with adjustable braking, or clamping means, or may be arranged to roll on the floor to position the parts for downhand welding.
