566,815. Automatic control systems for electric flat - irons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 14, 1943, No. 5963. Convention date, April 16, 1942. [Class 38 (iv)] Temperature.-To prevent overheating of an electric flat-iron when left in a horizontal position, an auxiliary thermal switch member 40 is heated during periods when a thermostatic switch 23 responsive to the temperature of the sole plate is open, so that when the rate of heat dissipation from the sole plate is reduced below a given value a spring-actuated switch member 36 restrained by the auxiliary switch member 40 is permitted to open contacts 32, 33 in series with the heating element 12 of the iron to prevent further heating until the auxiliary switch.has cooled. This cooling may occur after the supply circuit has been interrupted or after the iron has been stood on its heel ; in the latter case a gravity switch 51 is opened to interrupt the circuit including the heating element 44 of the auxiliary switch. The auxiliary switch is arranged to open contacts 42a, 42b in circuit with the heating element 44 to prevent its overheating, the switch member 36 engaging a stop 45. The heating element 12 may be made as described in Specification 144,767, [Class 38 (i)]. Specification 522,047, [Group XXXVII], also is referred to.
