Abstract

A metal salt of a fatty acid having 8 to 22 carbon atoms is condensed with a halogenalkylsulphonate, which may contain hydroxy groups and has 2 to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence of formylmorpholine. The latter facilitates completion of the reaction and may be removed by distillation at reduced pressures. The products are wetting and detergent agents. In an example, dry sodium coconut oil soap is reacted in the presence of formylmorpholine with sodium monochlorhydrinsulphonate. Stearates, palmitates, myristates and oleates may be used, including salts of alkaline earth and heavy metals. Potassium b -methylmonochlorhydrinsulphonate, sodium chlorethyl sulphonate, 2-chlormethylpropenesulphonate and brominated alkylsulphonates are mentioned. Formyl morpholine may be made by refluxing formic acid and morpholine.
