Abstract

<PICT:0564107/IV/1> Retted flax is formed into roving wound on bobbins of chemically resistant material which are placed for 1 to 2 hours, exceptionally up to 4 hours, in an apparatus where the flax is subjected at a temperature of 85 DEG to 95 DEG C. to the actions of an alkaline solution having a pH value of 12.5-13 which has been strongly buffered with alkaline salt of a weak organic acid to dissolve partly the pectin substance binding the ultimate fibres together, the bobbins being thereafter immediately placed in the creel of a wet spinning frame and the roving spun therein. As shown, the bobbins 3 filled with roving are perforated and are placed on spindles in an apparatus 1 having a perforated bottom 2. The bobbins are pressed together vertically by a cover 5 and the solution is pumped by a pump 12 along the pipe 9, through the bores and barrels of the bobbins and through the roving, to a return pipe 10. Steam is supplied by a pipe 11 to maintain the temperature of the solution and an overflow 8, thermometer 7 and pressure gauge 14 are provided.
