Abstract
559,055. Manhole covers. BROAD & CO., Ltd., and HARRIS, D. G. June 19, 1942, No. 8465. [Class 107] A manhole cover comprises a cast iron ring 1 with an internal flange 2 at its lower edge and diametrically opposite blocks 3 each with a lifting recess 4, the inner surface of the ring 1 being rough ; a sheet 6 of wire mesh, expanded metal &c. is supported on the flange 2 and the ring 1 is then filled with concrete, the base of which may be level with the flange, as shown to the right of Fig. 2, or extend below the base. The cover is supported by a frame comprising an outwardly rough cast iron ring 9, or light skeleton frame, with an internal flange 10 provided with spaced seatings for the flange 2 of the cover, the bottom of the ring 9 having spaced, outwardly extending curved portions 12 braced to the ring 9 by ribs 13, and the ring 9 being embedded in a reinforced concrete frame 8 which extends below the ring. The cover and frame have a co-operating projection and recess ensuring that the cover can be fitted into the frame only in one position, and they have registering prising slots 5, 14. The cover and frame may be circular, triangular, rectangular or other shape.
