Abstract
556,169. Heating gases. GAS LIGH r & COKE CO., SILVER, L., and MACCORMAC, M. March 20, 1942, No. 3746. Addition to 535,482. [Class 64 (i)] In apparatus for heating a stream of combustible gas in a main 11 by direct contact with the products of combustion from ignited gas taken from the main stream as described in the parent Specification, the igniter 20 is disposed outside the gas main instead of inside. Gas is drawn from the main into a combustion chamber 10 through openings 14 by air supplied under pressure to a nozzle 12, through a conduit 15 containing a cock 17 which is closed when the apparatus is not in use. Drain cocks 18, 19 are provided on either side of the cut-off cock 17. At starting, the cut-off cock is opened to allow gas to flow back to a mixing chamber containing the igniter and the resulting flame is then forced forward into the combustion chamber by pressure of the air supplied to the chamber through an inlet 13. In a modification, the igniter is placed in a mixing passage between an external air nozzle and the internal combustion chamber.
