Abstract

554,156. Paper of high wet strength JACKSON, Ltd., H., and WEXLER, A. Dec. 16, 1941, No. 5231/43. Divided out of 554,131. [Class 96] The strength, particularly the wet-strength of paper &c. is increased by treatment with a soluble alkali metal silicate, drying or partially drying and treating with an acid, or with a solution of a soluble metal salt and washing und drying. Acids used may be 2 N hydrochloric, or 2 per cent. sulphuric acid, the silicate used therewith having a greater alkali-to-silica ratio than in normal commercial silicates; or metal salts used may be sulphates of aluminium, iron, or magnesium or chlorides of calcium, iron, or magnesium, the silicate used therewith having a lower alkali-to-silica ratio than in commercial silicates. The process is applicable to paper made from pulp which has been treated with a silicate and alum. The treated paper may retain high absorbency and permeability to water &c. or may be waterproofed by waxes, oils, or resins.
