546,366. Reducing surface reflection. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 25, 1941, No. 5345. Convention date, April 26, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 97 (i)] Surface reflection from lead or barium glass is reduced by treating the surface to produce shallow depressions which cause scattering of reflected light and then treating the surface with an acid to produce a film having a thickness about one quarter of the wave length of light and a refractive index between that of the body and air. The surface may first be ground and then etched, repeatedly with hydrofluoric acid which removes minute sharp projections and widens narrow cavities, so that smooth concavities are produced, which scatter reflected light. The etched surface, with or without the opposite smooth surface, is then provided with the required film, which may be produced by immersion in nitric or acetic acid which removes the metal constituent and leaves a film of silicon dioxide. Glass so treated does not show colour when illuminated by ordinary polychromatic light. In a modification, the etched surface, in this case comprising elevated portions, is produced by rubbing the surface with ferric stearate or paraffin wax while hot, and then treating with concentrated hydrofluoric acid. The film on the etched surface is then produced as before. In another modification, an etch consisting of irregular ridges is produced by coating the surface with water and treating with hydrofluoric acid for a considerably longer period without agitation. The film is then produced as before.
