Abstract
532,878. Coating, magnesium and its alloys. DOW CHEMICAL CO. July 26, 1939, No. 21733, Convention date, Aug. 12, 1938. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] A coloured corrosive-resisting coating is produced on articles of magnesium or its alloys by treating the articles with an aqueous solution of a soluble base of an alkali or alkaline earth metal and a dye soluble in the solution under pressure of 20-400 lb. per sq. inch above the boiling point and between 110‹C. and 250‹C. Alkali hydroxides or carbonates are referred to and in example the solution contains 2-20 per cent. of sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide or sodium carbonate and 0.1-0.5 of a soluble dye and the temperature used 110-250‹C. Examples of alloys which are treated are (1) 6 per cent. of aluminium, 0.2 per cent. of manganese and 3 per cent. of zinc, rest magnesium, (2) 6 per cent. of aluminium, 0.2 per cent. of manganese, rest magnesium, (3) 6.5 per cent. of aluminium, 0.2 per cent. of manganese, 0.7 per cent. of zinc, rest magnesium.
