Abstract

536,379. Artificial filaments. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Nov. 10, 1939, No. 29841. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] In a process for forming filaments by the extrusion of molten compositions, the compositions are passed before extrusion through a filter bed of finely divided inert material such as silica sand, stainless steel filings or similar metal substances. The molten composition employed may be a synthetic linear polyamide, for example polyhexamethylene adipamide. The extrusion and filter apparatus consists of an internally threaded tubular member 3 which receives the upper part 1 containing the feed duct 2. The lower part of the member 3 screws into the cap 6 by which the spinneret plate 7 is retained in position. The joints are rendered tight by asbestos gaskets 5, 9 and coarse metal screens 12 rest on the spinneret plate 7 and support a fine mesh metal screen 11. The inert filter material rests on the screen 11 and may consist of layers A, 10, the latter layer 10 consisting of smaller grain size than the former. The inert material is covered by the screen 13 which can be pressed down as desired by the screw action of the part 1. The molten composition is fed under suitable pressure and temperature through the duct 2 to be forced downwards through the filter material and the holes 8 in the spinneret plate 7. Specification 536,380 is referred to.
